There were questions like “Why does it have to be Philippines?” and many others when I decided to tell everybody around me that I was going to study English in Philippines. At that time, my answer was, “It is cheaper than the other countries and its weather is very close to Thailand. Also, one month studying is quite a long time”. All was my thought before I went to Cebu. But it was better than what I expected. It was worth going. It was unbelievable and I got a great deal of experience from there:
(คุณฉันทสิทธิ์บอกว่า ตอนที่บอกใครๆ ว่าจะไปเรียนภาษาอังกฤษที่ฟิลิปปินส์ โดนถามเยอะมากกกก ซึ่งก็ตอบไปว่า เพราะมันราคาถูกกว่าที่อื่นและอากาศก็ใกล้เคียงเมืองไทย แต่สิ่งที่ไปเจอจริงๆ ที่เซบูมันเหนือกว่าที่คาดไว้เสียอีก)
First, I need to improve my English and to communicate smoothly but it is very difficult for “the old dog to learn the new trick”. I am used to focus on how to pronounce exactly like native English speakers and I have never thought or have any idea about other English-speaking countries like Hongkong, Singapore, Malasia, India, Philippine etc. They have their own pronunciation that are totally different from the native but the native can accept to communicate whit them. Why can’t we have “Thai-Lish” accent? My English is improved faster after I stop focus too much on accent.
(ผมอยากพูดภาษาอังกฤษได้คล่อง แต่มันยากซะแล้วสำหรับไม้แก่ ผมมักจะเน้นที่การพูดให้ได้สำเนียงเหมือนเจ้าของภาษา แต่ประเทศอื่นๆ ที่พูดภาษาอังกฤษสำเนียงไม่ได้เป๊ะฝรั่งก็ยังสื่อสารกับเค้าได้ ทำไมเราจะมีสำเนียงไทยลิชบ้างไม่ได้ล่ะ ภาษาอังกฤษผมพัฒนาขึ้นเยอะ เมื่อไม่ได้หมกมุ่นกับสำเนียงเกินไป)
Second, I found the big world for adults who want to improve their language from my classmate. I had classmates with different ages; from teenagers to adults; but I was the oldest because I was the only one who was 48 years old and I also was called “Papa Bear”. They called me by my physical look that was quite big and fat. The younger and teenager wanted to learn English to prepare themselves for the good university but the adults who were between 22-38 years old wanted the better job, travelling and the higher position. Even though we were very different in many aspects, we got along together very well. One thing that was very surprising to me was that most of them could speak more than one language; Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, Russian, Chinese; but they went to school for English.
(ผมมีเพื่อนร่วมชั้นหลากหลายอายุมาก แต่ผมก็แก่สุดอยู่ดี บางคนมาเรียนภาษาเพื่อเตรียมเข้ามหาวิทยาลัย บางคนมาเพื่อจะได้ได้งานดีๆ และเที่ยวด้วย และถึงแม้อายุจะต่างกัน เราก็เข้ากันได้ดี ที่ผมแปลกใจคือ คนส่วนใหญ่พูดภาษาอื่นๆ กันมากมาย แต่สุดท้ายก็ต้องมาเรียนภาษาอังกฤษ)
Lastly, I got my school life and my independent time back. It reminded me of several things in my life. Although I wasted a week for adapting to new environment, I found many things that I lost in the past. I have forgot about discipline, respect, honesty, punctuality, and humbleness that I used to have when I was a student. This period was the best chance for person who was getting old like me to remind and review all the thing I did and found many aspects of my thought that could not happen on my daily life.
(ผมได้รำลึกถึงช่วงวัยเรียนของผมอีกครั้ง หลายๆ สิ่งผมลืมไปแล้ว เช่น กฏระเบียบต่างๆ ความตรงต่อเวลา ซึ่งเคยมีสมัยเป็นเด็กนักเรียน การมาเรียนที่นี่ก็เหมือนได้ย้อนอดีต ทบทวนสิ่งที่เคยทำ และค้นพบแง่มุมความคิดต่างๆ ที่ไม่อาจพบได้ในชีวิตปกติ)
All in all, it is not only studying English because the important thing is your attitude. How brave are you to face the new world? Open your mind, step over your limit, and adjust your attitude. Then experience many things waiting for you in Cebu. Don’t believe me and try it by yourself. It won’t let you down.
(มันไม่ใช่แค่การเรียนภาษา แต่เป็นทัศนคติต่างหากที่สำคัญ คุณกล้าจะเผชิญสิ่งใหม่ๆ แค่ไหน เปิดใจแล้วจะได้พบประสบการณ์มากมายในเซบู ไม่ต้องเชื่อผม แต่ควรมาลองด้วยตัวเอง แล้วจะไม่ผิดหวัง)
